Look at the bright side…

13 Nov

Well, I haven’t posted anything for a while now.  I’ve been rather depressed.  There was an accident with my laptop; it slid off of the counter top while it was on.  In case you didn’t know…this is a really bad thing.  No harder than it had hit the floor, it really surprised me when I picked it up and it had a blue screen.  After I recovered from my momentary shock and swallowed the huge lump that had formed in my throat and threatened to suffocate me.  I proceeded to restart the computer.  It was running and my dread started to fade, but that faint feeling of hope was short lived.  It would only come up to the start menu.  It had two options to restart normally or manually.  I tried both options, but neither produced the desired outcome of seeing my homepage.

I decided to have someone look at it.  It took him about an hour.  He called with bad news.  Too many components had been damaged to retrieve any information, but he could salvage the computer; in his opinion it was worth fixing because of the kind of computer it was.  I told him that if the information couldn’t be retrieved that I wasn’t really in a hurry to fix it.  In the back of my mind I’m thinking..he only had it an hour.  How could he possibly come to this conclusion?  But he didn’t charge me for bad news. So I went for a second opinion.  Unfortunately, they came to the same conclusion, charged me forty bucks and lost my power chord.

I’m still shocked, hurt, sad, but mostly furious at myself.  Of course I didn’t have an external hard drive that I had everything saved on.  That would have been too easy.  Every time I went to get one I would ask myself ‘What are the odds something will happen?’  Well, now I know.  A hard lesson learned.

Not only was my second novel on the computer, but a third I had started.  Worse yet, I lost all of my accounting information for the small business I co-own with my husband.  But the one thing that breaks my heart above all else is the countless pictures of my two beautiful daughters that can never be replaced.

I’m a look at the bright side kind of person.  So, I’m trying to figure that out.
